My name is Maria M Williams, founder of The Art of Four, an art initiative I started in October 2019 in San Antonio, Texas. This email is to introduce you to The Art of Four and the initiative.
Taking notice of the local Black Art community in San Antonio, I found that Black artists do not have the same exposure or opportunity to exhibit in local galleries and spaces. A simple thought, how can I change this? I knew of four artists off the top of my head. I contacted each of them shared my vision, explaining I wanted to get more exposure and find the client base that could appreciate and recognize their work’s value, and from there, we created The Art of Four. We had our first private art show on January 25, 2020. SUCCESS! Riding high on the energy from the showcase and the buzz regarding The Art of Four, I wrote a proposal to The Institute of Texan Cultures; to present a contemporary art exhibit as part of the museum’s efforts to revitalize and modernize the African American exhibit space, which had not been done in nearly 40 years. The Institute of Texan Cultures accepted the proposal! It was to open with the fan fair and reception deserving of an exhibit of this caliber on April 11, 2020 and run through February 28, 2021. I was so proud of myself and so very excited for these four artists. Please note ITC is a designated Smithsonian affiliate, and these artists were going to be archived into the Smithsonian system. Then the pandemic hit, and the doors closed. I have been reassured that the exhibit is postponed and will take place once ITC can re-open. I refuse to let these artists down.
During this, I have met with curators and representatives of some of our most prestigious museums and institutions in San Antonio to build what I hope to be collaborative relationships. My ultimate goal is to open a physical gallery “Eye of The Beholder Contemporary Fine Art Gallery” a gallery with enough studio space for artist to create and a place where “we” don’t have to ask permission to celebrate who we are. I am hoping to have the website up by the end of March 2021.
