Business Description

Founded in 2013, The Modest Florist was created with sustainability at its core and is committed to environmentally-friendly solutions for the modern floral business. As the hometown florist in Baltimore’s Hampden neighborhood, it’s a source for supplying the community and Baltimore city with locally-grown flowers, greens and live plants. The Modest Florist seeks to return to the roots of the floral trade before the widespread use of environmentally-unfriendly supplies, products, and business practices. Combining 21st century technology and “old school” knowledge, The Modest Florist is the only florist in the MD/DC/VA region to offer a full range of floral services year ’round using only locally-grown flowers and foliage, reused/recycled containers, and no floral foam. The Modest Florist is the first and only florist to be recognized by and listed on the Maryland Department of Energy “Green Registry” and the owner is a LEED Green Associate.

Everyday we seek more opportunities to create a full-circle of sustainability and encourage the community to participate as well.  For instance, customers who bring in their own vases for re-use get a 10% discount. As we celebrate our 10th Anniversary year, rather than ordering mass-produced marketing merchandise, we are embroidering on vintage and thrifted dish towels and kitchen linens as keepsakes. All the furniture and fixtures in the store are reused and re-purposed.  Our packaging materials are recycled/recyclable and degradable/compostable. We have eliminated  single-use plastics and reuse/repurpose hard plastics (like flower buckets and plant trays). All lighting is energy-efficient LED’s and our electric supplier is 100% renewable.
